Largest ISP in area gets bigger

Agoura Hills, California (January 2002) - The largest locally based Internet service provider is getting bigger. Internet Specialties West Inc., an Agoura Hills business-to-business ISP, is taking over Goldenwave, a small Ventura-based ISP, Goldenwave owner George Tidd said Wednesday

"Small ISPs have a hard time growing and maintaining their equity position in this dot-bomb world," said Tidd. "ISWest offers a more solid foundation for growth."

ISWest will help Goldenwave customers in the transfer of Internet domain names, Web site reconstruction and establishing standard dial up or high-speed DSL or T1 Internet connections.

Tidd declined to disclose financial terms of the merger, pending completion of agreements with other Goldenwave investors. Tidd is the Ventura company's major investor. Goldenwave's parent company is EON Internet Services LLC.

By merging with ISWest, Goldwave will be able to continue operations and concentrate on running content Web sites, Tidd said. Goldenwave, which has been in business for about four years, operates the local "Go" Web sites, a network of mini search engines that are focused on local communities.

The network includes www.GoVentura.com, www.GoOxnard.com, www.GoCamarillo.com, www.GoMoorpark.com, www.GoWestlake.com, www.GoSanta Paula.com, www.GoFillmore. and www.GoSimi.com.

"ISWest will manage the Goldenwave accounts, but the Goldenwave name will continue on," Tidd said.

ISWest expects to add about 500 Goldenwave accounts to its customer base, said Drew Kaplan, ISWest's vice president of sales and marketing.

"The transfer of accounts is going on as we speak," Kaplan said.

Goldenwave account holders can continue to receive e-mail under their Goldenwave screen name, but eventually the Goldenwave name will be phased out, Kaplan said.

"It will be like we've done with all of our other mergers," Kaplan said.

ISWest, which last year invested more than $3 million in a new 10,000-square-foot headquarters and operations center, has a history of aggressive expansion. The Agoura Hills company has snapped up several smaller local ISPs that struggled to compete with more well-financed Internet service providers. In the last three years alone, ISWest has acquired NCPlus, Channel Island Internet and TSCO Internet, and, now, Goldenwave.

"We're still seeing a lot of consolidation in our industry," Kaplan said.

"You're going to continue to see consolidation."

A privately held company, ISWest recently was ranked the fourth largest ISP in Los Angeles County by the Los Angeles Business Journal.
